I've been mulling about whether I should post video clips of some of the heated confrontation at the Olympic torch rally and I was hoping I could use Youtube to stream the videos into my website. There is, however, the business of the learning curve; plus, I have not really seen a Flex application that does it successfully as yet. So for now, I'm posting a frame grab from one of the videos instead. The frame grab is not that bad, actually; I had used the HD setting on my Canon G9 when I recorded it.
Give it a few years and the photojournalists of tomorrow will only need to carry one high-resolution video camera that records in a very high frame rate per second. The editors would then be able to grab high resolution stills from the video itself. That's right, no more missed shots!

The protagonists of the day ... juxtaposed on the same spot in California Street. I hadn't planned on photographing anyone on this spot but as I got off the Embarcadero Station and started walking towards the Justine Herman Plaza, the 'image' sort of popped into my head when I saw a group of Tibetans milling about the area, I requested and got one to volunteer for a shot on that particular spot. I figured I'd find a Chinese person that same day ... carrying his own flag proudly on the same spot. And someone did show up -- just before I descended back down the Embarcadero Station on my way home.

I was hoping I would at least get a glimpse of the Olympic torch at the pre-announced route along the SF waterfront, but they re-routed the torch relay away from the pro-China and pro-Tibet crowds that has spilled over into the streets. Though the pockets of face-offs got too heated at times, I personally didn't see any physical violence committed by either side.
All in all, a good day for people practicing their right to free speech without fear of getting arrested or beaten by the authorities.

Both sides of the Embarcadero Street were actually barricaded and protesters were supposed to stay within those bounds but as emotions got heated up on both sides, most of the anti-China/Olympics groups spilled over into the street -- resulting in some heated face-offs by the opposing sides. One young Chinese man crossed the barricade himself and proceeded to wave his big red flag in the middle of the anti-China crowd -- resulting in a confrontation with the opposing side. People were chanting "China Lies, People Die" all around him. Some were blowing whistles in his face too. He stood his ground though, despite all the in-your-face harassment that he got. Gutsy, I must say, but a provocation nevertheless - in my opinion, of course .

Photographers tend to look for patterns, so when I started seeing more and more of these placard-carrying people with a sign that say's "Another _____ for a Free Tibet", an idea popped into my head that maybe I could make a mosaic image of them. I thought it'd be an interesting showpiece for free-speech and America's diversity. Hence, a series of them.

This is one of those photos where I start with an image in my head. They come to me in random for some reason. I had always wanted to do a panoramic shot of the Golden Gate that is taken from the bay and photographing the bridge from a ferry boat had always been my plan. However, it was easier thought than done as the waves proved too choppy for the boat ride -- making the alignment of the photos too challenging for me. As always, Photoshop came to the rescue when it came to stitching the photos together. This was 3 frame photo stitch.
This also marks the last image that my good-ole Canon SD410 digicam would ever take as I'm retiring it for good. My new Canon G9 is my new toy and will become my new carry-around camera for now.
